Seed Multiplication
Hand in Hand for Sustainable Agriculture (HIHSA) Ltd is a Rwandan women- and youth-led agribusiness dedicated to transforming seed systems through climate-smart Irish potato seed multiplication
G1 mini-tubers
produced from aeroponics and sandponics are germinated and directly cultivated in open fields for seed multiplication. This process continues through successive generations until G4, with certified seeds being the final product intended for farmers to plant for ware potato production.
G2 – Pre-Basic Seed
Pre-basic seed is the stage between breeder seed and foundation (basic) seed. It is produced under strict genetic control to generate sufficient quantities for foundation seed production.
G3 – Basic (Foundation) Seed
Basic or foundation seed is the descendant of breeder or pre-basic seed, produced under conditions that maintain genetic purity and identity. When produced by others, detailed variety descriptions guide the elimination of impurities (“off-types”) during production.
G4 – Certified Seed
Certified seed is the descendant of breeder, pre-basic, or basic seed, produced to ensure genetic purity and accurate identification of the variety, meeting defined standards for seed quality and uniformity.
